Krill.
My comment was a proposition and not a complain. deano6 is right when says you're doing fine (but why not to do a little more if even you could be benefited?).
I did not mentioned FLAC 'cause I lost everything I had in FLAC when I got a damage in a Hard Disk controller board (a logic problem). I lost YEARS of ripping in FLAC, APE, OGGI and everything still compressed by WINRAR and ZIP. What resisted? Everything in WAV and MP3 CBR. Today I rip everything to WAV and burn every 7 CDs ripped to 1 DVD and store it as a backup (I rip to WAV with EAC - Exact Audio Copy). Then I convert the WAV tracks to MP3 320 KBPS CBR with "Easy CD-DA Extractor" (that also rips - converts - burns - edits tags prior to conversion). These MP3 files are the ones I keep at my machine and upload them to my MP3 Player.
Why CBR if VBR can give me a smaller file with the same quality (at VBR set to maximum quality)? First for security (if happens a logic crash at your machine only the files with NO compression and MP3 CBR will survive - remember my experience) and second for compatibility (every fucking player in this fucking world will play these files - including 10 years old stand-alone DVD/CD players - support to VBR is more recent).
Why 320 KBPS? 'cause it's the maximum you can reach with MP3 and if you have a file in 320 KBPS you can convert it to any level of quality needed (maybe 96 Kbps for use in those chinese MP3 players - or 192 Kbps if you are going to hear it in a Ipod player - but if you are going to burn a CD with it in order to hear it in your car expensive stereo you better stay with the 320 Kbps file). The inverse is not true: you can't convert a 128 Kbps file to 192, 256 or 320 Kbps. If all you have is a 128 Kbps file this is all you will have forever (you can't do MORE if you have LESS). All convertion software "will do" 128 to 320 (has an example) but this is only cheatting - the 320 quality is not there (only the bigger space that this file will now use).
One of the very initial posts at my blog where just about this formats and levels discussion (unfortunately for you wrote in Brazilian Portuguese) http://vidadigitalknowhow.blogspot.com/2007/02/comear-do-comeo.html Maybe you can translate it with Google Translate or another tool like it (I think is too much to ask your son for). I also wrote a series of 4 or 5 posts about the "audiophile machine" and how to configure it (tune it) for security and performance when "playing" with our "toys":
1 - o Sistema Operacional (The OS)

2 - a máquina (The Machine)

6 - Configurando Windows 4 (Tunning 4)

Again, everything wrote in Brazilian Portuguese.
You can also find my email address at my Blogger "Perfil" (Profile). Why don't we expand this conversation offline?
Bem, é isto. Minhas desculpas pelo excesso e divirtam-se!
